Drifting on a memory - 2016 - Private assignment

(Text by Marloes van Ierland)

“Five years ago, I visited an exhibition at the Loydd Hotel curated by Kim van Beek. It was a beautiful location with beautiful art on the ground floor, so I walked upstairs in high spirits. What I saw there struck me immediately: a deer rising from the floor with antlers that seemed to grow into the sky along a ladder. On closer inspection, the detail of the wire was impressive; every fibre of the animal seemed to be translated into the relief of the wire rope. Her other work, such as the hare diving through the chair, also made me smile.

And then it's so clever, these images nestle in your head and come back to you again and again. When it makes such an impression, you can't help but decide one day to seek out the artist and get in touch.

When I contacted Caroline de Bruijn by telephone and visited her studio, it turned out that the large deer had not yet been sold, but no matter how I tried to fit it in, I couldn't find a nice place for it in my house. So what do you do when you've wanted something for years, but you'll have to move house to make it happen? Well, not with Caroline. She came to my house and together we found a place to create a new deer in the stairwell.

Everything measured and done, carpenter called in to climb up into the roof, and there it hangs, my “custom-made deer art”, made especially for me with love and just as beautiful, if not more so, than I could have hoped for.

For me, it is a symbol of happiness growing in the sky, with immense antlers and a wink. Everyone who sees it interprets it differently and enjoys it.

That is what Caroline can do: make people happy with art. This portfolio says it all. Once you have seen her work, it will stay with you.”
