For the love of lichen - 2023
An ode to the hidden beauty of lichens
‘For the Love of Lichen’ is an installation consisting of approximately 450 tiles. The tiles are presented in the shape of the three most prominent windows of a church on Ameland, creating a poetic projection of light and nature on the ground. Nature seems to slide in through the windows, while the division of space and the islands of colour also refer to the rich tradition of stained glass art. During a flight over Ameland, Caroline also saw the unique textures and patterns of the island from the air. This bird's-eye view also inspired her in the design of the installation. The islands of colour can also be found in the design of real lichens in nature.
Lichens, with their fascinating shapes and unprecedented variety, caught her attention a few years ago and have captivated her ever since. They sometimes grow only a millimetre per year, embodying a tranquil power, a subtle reminder of the time and patience of nature.
During the creative process, Caroline interwove the natural structures of lichens with her own imagination, creating an imaginative new world—like a voyage of discovery into a hidden universe, right before our eyes.
